January 2013: Janae
Q. Happy New Year! Firstly, how did you become a fan of Doctor Who?
A. Actually I only recently became a fan because when the first episode I watched on TV was The Girl in the Fireplace, it made no sense to me going back and forth from old time France to a spaceship and masked monsters that were creepy.
Lucky for me, about a year later my brother begged me to watch The Christmas Invasion. After that I was hooked on the show and watched every episode going back to 2005.
Q. The Doctor returned to our screens last month in The Snowmen. What did you think of the special and in particular the new opening titles and TARDIS?
A. I wasn't very much in the Christmas spirit this year being older and not receiving fun gifts like you do as a child but more grown up and logical gifts like socks and bank bonds. But the best gift was given by BBC in the Doctor Who Christmas Special. I very much enjoyed the return of Jenny, Vastra and Strax and the return of the Doctor, who seemed to have been absent way too long. I really like the differences in Jenna's character Clara - she is much more witty and exciting. The opening was surprising to me because it was so different and fun! I liked the exploding colors and the revamped music. Finally, I really like the new feel of the TARDIS. Its welcoming and friendly, but to me I am getting a rather ominous foreshadowing feeling too. Is this a more dangerous than normal TARDIS? Yes, I think it is.
Q. The episode featured the debut (well, we say 'debut'...) of Jenna-Louise Coleman as Clara Oswald, and there's already a huge mystery afoot. It's hard to predict Steven Moffat's mind, but try ann hazard a guess as to who she might be...
A. I think she is something entirely new. I don't think she is a repeat of anything in the show. I don't think she is the child of a Time Lord or anyone else. I do not believe she is the 12th Doctor, which is a theory I've read. I know she is going to get a lot of attention and not just from the Doctor but others as well.
Q. We were also treated to a stunning new trailer for Series 7: Part 2 at the end of the episode. What did you think? Anything catch your eye?
A. Well the first thing, the Doctor and companion return again to riding about on a scooter which I loved previously. The monsters look rather terrifying and Clara seems to handling it all in a great way. Matt seems to return again with a genuinely familiar but new Doctor for us all.
Q. 2013 has arrived which means Doctor Who officially turns 50 years old later this year! If you were in charge (and weren't constrained by money and circumstance), how would celebrate the series' historic milestone?
A. I've liked in the show how the Doctor effects history, for example a small image of the TARDIS in stained glass. I'd like to have these little things that remind us of the Doctor around the globe.
Q. What would you say is the best thing about being a Doctor Who fan?
A. I think it gives you the rights to being enthusiastic and passionate and a little bit mad.
Q. If you had just one chance to travel anywhere in time or space, where would you choose to go?
A. I think I'd like to back to the civil war time period and meet Harriet Tubman, who has been one of my top history icons. I'd also like for her to take a trip in the TARDIS and see how life is today.
Q. If you could meet any of the Doctor Who cast or crew, who would it be and why?
A. I'd say Karen Gillan because she is one of the fiercest women I've seen on and off screen.
Q. Anything else you'd like to say before you go?
A. That now that I have seen all the of new Doctor Who it will feel like time travel going back and watching the episodes that aired in 1963.
