Script Extract

THE DOCTOR and ROSE are prisoners, wrists sealed in clunky, heavy electro-manacles, fastened to a horizontal bar. Wrists at head-height. The DRONES are back at their desks. The EDITOR's centre, the huge JAGRAFESS looming above him.

EDITOR Create a climate of fear, and it's easy to keep the borders closed. It's just a matter of emphasis. The right word in the right broadcast, repeated often enough, can destabilise an economy. Invent an enemy. Change a vote.

ROSE So all the people on Earth, they're like... slaves.

EDITOR Well, now, there's an interesting question. Is a slave a slave if he doesn't know he's enslaved?

  • This episode was originally going to be entirely from Adam's point of view, and how he was seeing the Doctor and Rose as 'enigmatic, frightening characters'. Because of this, the episode had the working title of 'Adam'.
  • Another working title was 'The Companion Who Couldn't'.
  • The frozen vomit that Adam spits out after his operation is a kiwi and orange ice cube. Tasty!
Memorable Quotes
  • Rose: That's what you get for showing off. Your history's not as good as you thought it was.
The Doctor: My history is perfect.
    Rose: Well, obviously not.
  • The Editor: Knowledge is power, and you've got infinite knowledge, Doctor. The Human Empire is tiny, compared to what you've seen. In your T,A,R,DI,S - TARDIS!
The Doctor: Well you're not getting your hands on it. I'll die first!
The Editor: Die all you like, I don't need you! I've got the key!
  • Adam: I just wanted to help.
The Doctor: You were helping yourself.
